The most fun I've ever had online...
No, its not facebook or twitter - while those sites are great - for someone who is continuously seeking deals online, the thrill of getting a bargain on a penny auction site is unsurpassed. Some people play penny auctions for the competitive action, not minding that they end up paying retail price (or more!) for the items they "win", just so they win...its an ego thing for some and it is too easy to get swept up in that mindset, I've done it a few times myself. Unfortunately, I wouldn't catagorize those times as "fun".
While penny auctions are a somewhat new concept, more and more of them are popping up every day. Some legit, some not so much. You see, it is very easy for a penny auction to run bot, or shill, bidders to drive the prices of their items up so that they won't lose money. I would say there are probably more scam sites out there than there are legit sites. Shortly after I found my first penny auction site - pennypurses.com - I started googling around for other sites and found pennyauctionwatch.com. A visit to this site is a MUST for anyone thinking about taking the plunge into the penny auction world. Luckily, I found PAW before I tried any other site and, knock on wood, I've never been ripped off or invested money into a site that was a scam. The PAW blog is a great resource for exposing scam sites, but don't stop there, dive into the forums and read reviews on dozens of pennyauction sites by PAW users. You will quickly learn which sites are legit and which sites are a scam...and if you don't see a site you are wondering about you can always start a thread for it and you will likely get feedback on the site from several PAW users.
If you remain skeptical about penny auctions, leave your questions or comments and I will answer you as best as I can. I am not a site owner, I'm just an occasional player who has gotten some really, really good deals! Here are my best wins from my favorite sites:
A HUGE $398 Michael Kors Brookville handbag that I won for $2.07 using about 25 bids at 63 cents per bid at Dime-Divas.com and the ultimate steal - a $498 Coach carry-on duffle bag for $1.86 and just TWO BIDS at 65 cents each from pennypurses.com!
Believe me, it is not always that easy to win but it CAN happen. You just need to watch the auctions for a little while, study the other users, set a limit on how much you're willing to lose, and of course, a little luck can't hurt! Happy Bidding!
